Cycling with your dogs

Hello does anyone else cycle with their dogs. I'm just after some advice. I've been cycling with mine for a while and until yesterday 1.6 miles was a struggle and he was pooped afterwards. I then started doing a 1 mile warm up before and 1.6 mile cool down after, aiming for a moving recovery.

We hadn't been out for a while due to work (both me and the dog working) and when I took him last night he blitzed 1.6 miles without any rest or pedalling from me and then had a brisk 2.5 mile cool down walk and was still super energetic and hyper when we got home.

I'm going to increase the distance of the ride and walking but I wondered if anyone could advise me on how much to increase it by please?

Thanks in advance guys
;)

If you haven't done it for a while then you have to build up from less than where you left off, because over time the fitness will deteriorate, but bring him back on gently & he should be back up to level :)

It's the same with the hydrotherapy, if one of our dogs haven't been for a while we have to start again on 5 minutes, then 10 & so on.. :)

Hope this helps.

That's what I found strange. He hadn't done it for a while but seemed to find it a lot easier than he did before the time off.

Usually he'd need a few minutes break before the uphill stretch but he didn't need that and he had a longer cool down than before and was still full of energy when we got home. Is it possible that doing a lot of small regular walks (patrols) have increased his fitness above what it previously was?

Yes it would, it's still exercise & also a short rest is always a good help, how long was he not doing the they cycling?

Cool, his endurance seems to have just taken a massive leap, I like it ;)

He had 2 or 3 weeks without any cycling, just walks. It depends on which site were on, usually it's 8-10x 5minute walks but some times, like last night, it's 6x 2mile walks.

I've been trying to plan another route to add a little more distance, tomorrow or tonight I'm going to add an extra street in to increase it slightly, only 0.2miles and see how he gets on. :)
