Hi from new member, alapaha blue blood bulldog

Post by blueblood » May 15th, 2016, 4:39 pm

Hi, I have an 12 week old female alapaha blue blood bulldog, I'm hoping I'm not the only one as they are quite rare. It's early days but she's already proving very challenging to walk on a lead (very stubborn and won't move much) and general crazy puppy behaviour in the house. So I'm hoping for some useful advice, not my first dog but she's something else!
Thanks,
Steve

cute pup bulldogs are just plain stubborn ive had american bulldogs in the past and have a 7 month frenchie cross staffy now hes the most stubborn dog ive ever had took ages to get him walking on the lead outside he was about 4 5 months when he finally did it i laid a trail of his kibble on the floor then hooked him up to the lead and let him see the first 1 he walked on snaffling up the treats as he went did it a few times and now he loves the lead and going out he still goes backwards as soon as i try to pull him forward tho hates getting in the car i have to pick him up and put him in, is very domineering but does learn very quick and hates being told off im sure youll get the walking thing do you use a collar or a harness ?

She already just about walks along outside on a harness at 12 weeks old, but only if I coax her along with treats. It's no big deal really, its just I've had staffies before and never dealt with a really stubborn dog, they were eager to go anywhere, anytime.
The lead and collar was a disaster, she went completely mental, on a harness it's much better, she gets to the end of the drive, then it's stop and start, plants herself or lies down then walks five metres and stops again.
I guess I should be more patient, but its hard because she needs to be scocialised as much as possible out there. The Alapaha is a real handful if it develops aggression towards anything, and she's a proper fearless little maniac already.
love her whatever though

Yeah its very frustrating at first enzo would just shut down completley where abouts do you live our vets do puppy play days at the surgery so the pups can play and socialise maybe see if there is something in your area that does the same or a puppy class bulldogs are very dif to staffys i was in the exact same place persever she ll get there do you have a long lead or a extendable lead so when she stops you can just ignore her and walk on maybe she ll folow

just had another thought try using the harness on her inside at meal times etc so she sees the harness as some thing positive so like put it on her walk her to where you feed her give her her food or take her in the garden with harness on and play games she loves all building up the harness to be positive even if you dont take her out for a week just keep putting on for food and play times till she gets excited when she sees it then try her outside again is it busy where you live cars going by etc if so and you drive take her somewhere quiet to walk her

Thanks Mayhem, the extendable lead is a great idea, it makes a lot of sense gonna get one asap. I live in Shropshire and there's a puppy socialization place I'm taking her to at the weekend.

Two weeks on and a lot of patiance and I've just about got Cassie walking, at about 50% anyway. The flexi lead idea helped a lot (thanks again mayhem). The trick with her is everything has to be her own idea, her only problem is being stubborn, she is really confident and fearless.
It looks like I picked the alpha bitch, though I've never had an Alapaha before, maybe the're all like that.
At 14 weeks she's nearly 10kg, here's a pic taken this afternoon.
